FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

When are concerts, rehearsals, etc.?

Dates are always inputted on the weekly emails/Canvas (in the current week at the top) AND they can also be found on the website under "Forms and Calendar". The website is the best resource for questions.

What is UIL?

UIL stands for University Scholastic League and is the governing body for ALL things competitive in Texas public schools. Each activity has an abundant Constitution and Contest Rules (C&CR) that describes all aspects of participation in UIL sponsored events such as UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest. This is not a competition against other schools but rather an evaluation on our performance as a group (like Solo and Ensemble, or Piano Festivals, etc.). You could compare this to our version of a EOC or standardized test.

Is Pre-UIL required?

Pre-UIL is required for participation in UIL. Students who are unable to attend Pre-UIL will not be going to UIL and will be given an alternate assignment for both performances.

What happens when a string breaks or my bridge falls down or my instrument is in need of repairs?

If an instrument needs repaired, students should first have an orchestra director or private lesson teacher inspect the instrument. Sometimes minor repairs can be made free of charge. In the event the repair is too complex for a director or lesson teacher, the instrument must be delivered to the repair shop as soon as possible. All repair costs for school-owned instruments will be charged to the student unless the damage is caused by normal wear-and-tear. Remember, it is important to get the instrument fixed ASAP because without it, students will not be able to participate fully in class and may fall behind.

Where can I find the most up to date information?

Search your email for emails from Ms. Lien (lienv@friscoisd.org). She sends weekly emails regarding what is happening. You can also check Canvas for any upcoming work that is due and feedback that has been given.

How can my student move up orchestra levels?

Each year, students will reaudition for placement for the following year. This audition shows what a student can do and how the student prepares by themselves without the aid of an orchestra director. Of course, students audition each and every day during class as well. For more information about auditions and moving up orchestra levels, refer to the orchestra handbook
